Sunday Morning Bible Study

First Families: And You Thought YOUR Family was Dysfunctional!

A closer look at the stories of Genesis

Over the course of the summer, we will spend some time during the Sunday morning Fellowship Hour walking through the stories of Genesis:

June 13: Creation
June 20: The Fall
July 18: Cain and Abel
July 25: Noah and the Flood
August 1: The Tower of Babel
August 8: Abraham, Sarah, and Isaac
August 22: Jacob and Esau
August 29: Jacob's Sons

Each story will be looked at separately, so be sure to come when you can.

Please consider hosting one of these times with your gifts of baked goods and other treats. The sign-up is in the Welcome Center.

Considering God's Gift of Time

Wednesday Night Cookout & Book Study Continues through August 4th AT 6 PM in Salem's Fellowship Hall

Time.  We count it in seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years. Sometimes it seems to drag on as we wait for a special day (ask any youngster --- or maybe any school teacher at this time of year how time seems to drag on when we wait for summer vacation to begin.) Often it flies by and we pick our heads up wondering where it has gone. There are times when we find ourselves panicking over the amount that must be done in a limited amount of time. And there are others when a lonely Sunday afternoon seems never to end.

Time.  We do well to take a step back sometimes to wonder at how we use the gift of time that is ours. This summer, you will be invited to do just that as we gather for Wednesday night cookouts and book study. Our focus this year will be the book Receiving the Day: Christian Practices for Opening the Gift of Time by Dorothy C. Bass. Each week through August 4th we will come together in Fellowship Hall on Wednesday nights at 6 p.m., share a meal together, and then spend time in study and conversation. There will also be programming for children, so these promise to be fun nights for the whole family.

The cost for the book is $9.50. You will be invited to bring a dish to pass and to take your turn on the grill and providing the meat (which will be reimbursed with a free will offering.) Sign up in Salem's Welcome Center today to reserve your book. If you can come just once or you can make it all eight times, it promises to be a good experience!

Children's Midweek Program continues
"Families from Genesis"
Wednesdays at 6:45 p.m. through August 4th
Along with family cookout at 6:00 p.m. and adult book study at 6:45 p.m.
All ages welcome!

College Scholarship Applications Due!

Salem students who will be attending a Lutheran-affiliated college this upcoming school year may submit an application for a scholarship to the Trust Fund by August 15, 2010. This scholarship is administered by the Trust Fund, but is made available by an endowment fund established by the former WELCA organization. Students should submit a letter of request to the Trust Fund that includes the name of the college they will be attending, the class level they will be at in the fall, and a brief statement as to how this scholarship will help them. It is anticipated the Trust Fund will review requests and then distribute scholarships proportionately based on the monies that are available for distribution. Students should expect announcement of scholarships prior to September 1, 2010.

Enjoy Quilting?

Are there quilters in Salem’s congregation? Maybe some folks who would like to gather monthly (or however often) and make quilts for Lutheran World Relief? Please let us know. Teaching is available! Call the office (815/895-9171) if interested.

Are You a Gardner?

If you have extra produce from your gardens, consider donating it to Salem’s Food Pantry. Please clean off the dirt, etc. and drop it off on any morning. Thanks!

Extra Children's Books

If your kids have extra books that are in good shape, consider bringing them to the office to be put out for clients using our Food Pantry. Please be sure each book is in good condition — it may be the only book a child receives this year.
